Rain rot, caused by Dermatophilus congolensis, is a common bacterial skin infection in horses causing crusting, hair loss and discomfort, particularly in wet conditions.
Rain rot causes pain and discomfort from crusting lesions, particularly when tack is applied over affected areas. Secondary bacterial infection can worsen the condition. Welfare priorities include removing crusts gently with medicated shampoo, keeping affected areas dry, ensuring shelter access, treating underlying causes such as insect biting, and using topical or systemic antimicrobials in severe cases.
