Equine sarcoids are the most common skin tumour in horses, causing welfare impacts from irritation, secondary infection, and interference with tack and harness.
Sarcoids cause welfare impacts primarily through their location: periocular sarcoids impair vision; sarcoids under the girth or saddle area cause pain under tack and prevent work; sarcoids at the groin or between hindlimbs cause chafing and prevent normal movement. Secondary infection following self-trauma causes pain and systemic illness. The psychological impact on horse welfare of repeated painful treatment attempts must also be considered in management planning.
