Rabbit GI Stasis: A Veterinary Emergency

Gastrointestinal stasis is one of the most common and dangerous conditions in domestic rabbits. The gut slows or stops, causing pain, toxin buildup and death within hours if untreated.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

GI stasis is extremely painful. Rabbits are prey animals that hide pain, making early recognition difficult for owners. By the time clinical signs are obvious — no droppings, hunched posture, teeth grinding — the rabbit may already be critically ill. Prevention through adequate hay provision and rapid veterinary response are essential welfare priorities.
