Rabbit Haemorrhagic Disease Welfare and Vaccination

Rabbit haemorrhagic disease (RHD) exists in two strains in the UK and causes rapid, often sudden death in unvaccinated domestic and wild rabbits, with RHDV2 now widespread.

Welfare Considerations

RHD2 causes rapid internal bleeding and death, often with significant suffering in the hours before death. The welfare case for vaccination is overwhelming. Even indoor rabbits face risk of indirect transmission. Annual or 6-monthly vaccination depending on vaccine type is the essential prevention measure.

What You Can Do

Vaccinate all rabbits with a vaccine covering both RHD1 and RHD2
Maintain vaccination schedule carefully, especially outdoors
Quarantine new rabbits before introducing to existing animals
Wash hands before handling rabbits after being outdoors
Contact your vet immediately if multiple rabbits die suddenly
