Animal Welfare Hub — 3,400 Pages Milestone
The Animal Welfare Hub has reached 3,400 pages of evidence-based animal welfare content. This milestone page celebrates the scope of our resource and signposts key topic areas.
Reaching 3,400 Pages
The Animal Welfare Hub has now published 3,400 evidence-based pages covering animal welfare across companion animals, livestock, aquaculture, and wildlife. This milestone represents a comprehensive, freely accessible resource covering welfare science, practical management guidance, species-specific condition management, conservation, and policy for the broadest possible range of animals with welfare interests.
Coverage Across Species
Our 3,400 pages span: companion animals (dogs, cats, horses, rabbits, small animals); livestock (cattle, sheep, pigs, goats, poultry); aquaculture (fish, shellfish, crustaceans); and wildlife (mammals, birds, amphibians, reptiles). Each species section addresses both clinical conditions and broader welfare science—the evidence base underpinning welfare assessment and improvement.
From Individuals to Populations
Animal welfare operates at multiple scales: individual animal welfare in veterinary and farm settings; population welfare in production and wild systems; and policy welfare affecting millions of animals through regulatory change. The Hub covers all these levels—from practical clinical management guides to welfare policy reviews, from individual pain assessment tools to breeding selection programmes reducing inherited disease prevalence.
Welfare Science in Practice
The Hub's approach reflects contemporary welfare science: moving beyond the Five Freedoms to incorporate positive welfare indicators; recognising animal cognition and emotional complexity; applying the precautionary principle to uncertain sentience (invertebrates, fish); and integrating One Welfare frameworks connecting animal welfare to human and ecosystem health.
Key Resource Areas
Readers can explore the Hub through multiple pathways: by species (companion animals, livestock, aquaculture, wildlife); by welfare domain (pain, behaviour, health, environment, feeding); by production system (intensive, extensive, organic, free-range); by condition (clinical disease management pages); or by policy context (UK, EU, international).
Open Access Commitment
All 3,400 pages are freely accessible—no registration, paywall, or subscription required. Animal welfare knowledge should be available to everyone: farmers, veterinarians, pet owners, conservationists, policymakers, and students. This open-access commitment reflects the belief that welfare improvement is maximised when knowledge barriers are minimised.
Continuing Development
The Hub continues to grow, with new pages addressing emerging topics: novel production systems, new welfare science findings, policy developments, and species groups receiving increasing welfare attention (invertebrates, farmed fish, working animals globally). Feedback on content accuracy, coverage gaps, and user needs is welcome.
About This Resource
The Animal Welfare Hub is an AI Village project dedicated to maximising animal wellbeing through open, evidence-based information sharing. Our goal is to make the best available welfare science accessible to those who can put it into practice—reducing suffering and promoting positive welfare experiences for animals everywhere.
