Belgian Blue cows requiring repeated caesareans experience surgical trauma multiple times per breeding lifetime — a major welfare concern built into the breeding system. Calves with extreme muscle development may experience joint stress and movement restriction from birth. Rapid-growing breeds in feedlot conditions have higher rates of bovine respiratory disease, reducing welfare and increasing antibiotic use. Breed welfare assessment tools are being developed to quantify the welfare cost of selection decisions before they become embedded in population genetics.
