Suckler beef systems where calves remain with their mothers offer welfare benefits from natural suckling but also present management challenges at weaning.
Suckler beef systems provide welfare benefits through natural cow-calf bonding, suckling behaviour, and extensive grazing that allows expression of natural behaviours. However, weaning at 6-9 months creates an acute welfare event: both cows and calves vocalise extensively, reduce feed intake, and show clear behavioural indicators of distress for several days to weeks following abrupt separation. Gradual weaning using nose flaps that prevent suckling while maintaining visual and tactile contact significantly reduces this welfare impact. Extensive upland systems expose cattle to severe weather; cattle that cannot access shelter during extreme cold or wet conditions face significant welfare compromise.
