The welfare gap between extensive suckler beef systems with pasture access and intensive indoor finishing is significant across multiple welfare domains. Calves reared with mothers and pasture access have better immune development, more natural behaviour expression, and lower stress than calves reared intensively. However, management quality within any system matters as much as the system itself. Consumer choices can drive system change when welfare labelling is clear.
