Neonatal scour welfare management requires excellent colostrum management, early recognition of dehydration, and prompt oral fluid therapy. Farms with robust colostrum protocols and early treatment systems achieve significantly lower calf mortality rates.

What You Can Do

Ensure all calves receive 3-4 litres of good quality colostrum within the first 6 hours of life
Implement oral rehydration therapy promptly for any scouring calf showing signs of dehydration
Develop a scour prevention programme with a vet including vaccination and hygiene management
Use appropriate disinfection protocols in calving pens to reduce pathogen load between calvings
