Colostrum Management and Calf Welfare: The First Hours Matter Most

Adequate colostrum intake in the first hours of life determines calf immune status and survival. Welfare-centred colostrum management is the single most impactful early intervention available.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Failure of passive transfer (FPT) leaves calves immunologically vulnerable to common pathogens including E. coli, Salmonella, coronavirus, and rotavirus. The resulting diarrhoea, pneumonia, and septicaemia cause significant welfare impacts from illness and death. Welfare-positive colostrum management includes BRIX refractometer testing of colostrum quality (target above 22% Brix), volume measurement of first feed, and serum total protein testing of calves at 24-48 hours to verify adequate transfer. FPT rates below 10% are achievable with good management.
