Copper deficiency causes a condition known as swayback or enzootic ataxia in calves -- causing severe neurological signs

Pastures on certain geological substrates are naturally copper-deficient -- farmers on these soils should be alert

Calves born to copper-deficient dams may have devastating neurological disease (swayback) that cannot be reversed once established. Prevention through nutritional monitoring is entirely achievable and prevents avoidable welfare harm.

What You Can Do

Test blood or liver copper levels in cattle on copper-deficient soils annually
Work with your vet to develop a copper supplementation programme appropriate to your soil type
Monitor calves for neurological signs that may indicate in utero copper deficiency
Avoid over-supplementation -- excess copper is toxic, particularly if sheep share the pasture
