Evidence-based resources for animal wellbeing
A 2025 welfare evidence update on cattle dehorning and disbudding, including pain management requirements, polled genetics alternatives, and regulatory progress.
Cattle dehorning causes substantial, preventable pain. The long-term solution is polled genetics — selecting hornless cattle eliminates the need for the procedure entirely. In the interim, all disbudding must use both local anaesthesia and post-procedural NSAIDs. Farmers, vets, and breed societies all have roles to play in accelerating the shift to polled animals.
