Calf Welfare: Bovine Respiratory Disease Prevention and Treatment

Bovine respiratory disease (BRD) is the most economically significant disease in beef and dairy calves, and also a major welfare concern. It affects up to 25% of beef calves in feedlot systems and causes significant pain and distress before and during treatment.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

BRD causes significant pain: calves with active pneumonia show elevated respiratory rate, nasal discharge, depression, reduced feed intake, and measurably elevated pain biomarkers. Traditional reliance on single-antibiotic treatment without concurrent anti-inflammatory analgesia prolongs suffering. Research shows that adding meloxicam to antibiotic treatment reduces fever duration and improves appetite recovery. Prevention through metaphylaxis, vaccination programs, and reducing mixing-transport stress is both economically and welfare-justified. Health monitoring technologies including automated cough detection and temperature-sensing ear tags enable earlier detection.
