Bovine respiratory disease (BRD) complex is the most costly and welfare-significant disease condition in the beef and dairy calf industry, causing pneumonia, chronic lung damage, and significant mortality.
BRD causes acute suffering from pneumonia, fever, and respiratory distress. Calves with BRD experience difficulty breathing, anorexia, and weakness, with mortality rates reaching 2-5% in severe outbreaks. Survivors with chronic lung lesions face ongoing respiratory compromise and reduced welfare throughout their lives. Housing ventilation is a key modifiable risk factor; draughty, poorly designed housing dramatically increases BRD incidence. Good colostrum management, appropriate vaccination, and early detection and treatment substantially reduce the welfare burden.
