Cattle are highly social animals and social isolation is a significant welfare concern, whether during disease treatment, weaning or management of individual animals.
Social isolation in cattle causes significant psychological distress evidenced by vocalisation, pacing, reduced feed intake and elevated stress hormones. Even brief isolation for veterinary treatment represents a welfare compromise. Systems that allow social contact during treatment and management, including transparent barriers between pens, significantly reduce stress. The Five Domains framework recognises social needs as a core welfare requirement.
