Summer Grazing and Cattle Welfare

Access to summer grazing significantly improves cattle welfare by allowing expression of natural behaviours and supporting physiological and psychological wellbeing.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Access to summer pasture is one of the highest-welfare management choices available for cattle — animals on pasture show more positive welfare indicators, fewer injuries, and more natural social behaviour. The lameness benefit of pasture access is well documented. In hot summers, shade provision and access to adequate water become critical welfare requirements for grazing cattle. Welfare of pasture-based cattle is not automatic — management quality, pasture availability and hot weather management all determine actual welfare outcomes.
