Veal production from male dairy calves has historically been associated with severe welfare problems, but welfare standards have improved significantly with modern systems.
Traditional white veal production with crate confinement and all-milk diets caused extreme welfare deprivation. Modern EU and UK veal standards require group housing in bedded systems with access to solid feed, substantially improving welfare. The alternative facing male dairy calves without a veal market is early euthanasia, making welfare-positive veal production ethically preferable. UK rose veal uses intact bull calves raised to 6-8 months in group housing with straw bedding and access to roughage. The product is less pale than white veal due to dietary iron and more normal behavioral expression. Supporting UK rose veal creates market value for male dairy calves and reduces early euthanasia rates.
