Access to clean, palatable water is a fundamental welfare requirement for cattle, yet water quality issues are a common but often overlooked welfare problem.
Cattle denied adequate clean water suffer rapidly — dehydration impairs thermoregulation, reduces feed intake and milk yield, and causes significant physical distress. Many farms underestimate water requirements, particularly in hot weather. Trough design, placement and cleaning frequency all affect water quality and accessibility. Every animal must be able to drink simultaneously during periods of high demand to prevent competition and ensure subordinate animals receive sufficient water.
