Cattle have a strong motivation to move and exercise, and systems that provide movement opportunities show measurable welfare benefits including improved hoof health, bone density, and psychological wellbeing.
Exercise is not merely a welfare nice-to-have but a biological necessity for cattle health and wellbeing. The musculoskeletal system requires mechanical loading through movement to maintain bone density and joint health. Psychologically, cattle in systems that provide no novelty or movement opportunity show stereotypic behaviours and reduced responses to positive stimuli consistent with learned helplessness. Even limited outdoor access or indoor exercise yards substantially improve welfare compared to continuous confinement. The welfare case for movement opportunities applies equally to beef and dairy cattle, regardless of production system.
