Neonatal calf scour is the most common cause of death in calves under 30 days of age, representing a major welfare and economic challenge across the cattle industry.
Calf scour imposes rapid, severe welfare deterioration. Dehydration causes weakness, recumbency and acidosis within 12-24 hours in severe cases. Scouring calves experience abdominal pain, cold extremities and progressive weakness — clear welfare signs that require immediate recognition and response. Oral electrolyte rehydration therapy, when initiated early, prevents progression to severe dehydration and significantly improves welfare outcomes. Prevention through vaccination of dams (Rotavec, Bovilis) and environmental hygiene (Scour Fence protocol) reduces outbreak incidence substantially.
