Subacute rumen acidosis caused by poorly managed high-concentrate feeding causes chronic pain, reduced feed intake, and secondary lameness through laminitis. The inflammatory cascade triggered by rumen acidosis has systemic effects including liver abscess formation and immune suppression. Cows with SARA experience negative welfare states associated with gastrointestinal pain.
