Evidence-based resources for animal welfare
Digital dermatitis (DD) is now the most common cause of lameness in dairy cattle worldwide. This guide covers welfare and evidence-based control.
Welfare-centred DD management requires a systematic herd-level approach combining individual treatment and preventive footbathing. Lesion scoring using the M-score system guides treatment decisions. Early-stage lesions (M0-M1) respond to footbathing; active lesions (M2) require individual bandaged tetracycline treatment. Chronic lesions (M4) are more resistant. Footbathing with copper sulphate or formalin solutions reduces bacterial transmission. Housing hygiene, stocking density, and track management reduce environmental contamination.
