Copper deficiency is a widespread but underdiagnosed welfare problem in grazing cattle, causing a range of clinical and subclinical welfare impacts.
Subclinical copper deficiency creates a chronic welfare impairment — cattle are unable to mount adequate immune responses, have impaired energy metabolism and poor coat quality — without showing signs obvious enough to trigger treatment. Swayback in calves, caused by copper-dependent myelin formation failure, is a severe welfare condition causing progressive neurological deterioration. Targeted supplementation via bolus, injection or mineralised feed prevents deficiency welfare impacts when tailored to soil and forage analysis.
