Dehorning and disbudding of cattle is widespread globally to prevent injury. When performed without anaesthesia and analgesia, it causes severe acute and chronic pain. UK legislation requires pain relief for dehorning of older cattle, but compliance varies.
Disbudding and dehorning without adequate pain management causes severe acute pain and ongoing post-procedure pain lasting 24-72 hours. Calves that receive local anaesthetic only experience pain when the block wears off, highlighting the need for concurrent NSAID administration. The welfare improvement from adopting full pain management protocols (local block plus NSAID) is well-evidenced and the cost is minimal relative to the welfare benefit.
