Dehorning and disbudding of cattle cause significant acute and chronic pain, with welfare evidence strongly supporting local anaesthesia, NSAIDs, and breed selection toward polled genetics as the path to eliminating this practice.
Disbudding without anaesthesia causes intense acute pain detectable through heart rate, cortisol, and behavioural changes lasting hours. Even with local block, post-procedure sensitisation and inflammation cause pain for 24 hours without NSAID treatment. Dehorning of adult animals with established horns causes more severe acute pain and prolonged wound healing. Hot iron disbudding of conscious calves without analgesia is among the most welfare-damaging routine farm procedures. Polled genetics represent the most complete welfare solution, eliminating the need for the procedure entirely.
