Adequate water provision is fundamental to cattle welfare, with dehydration during heat stress representing one of the most preventable welfare failures in livestock farming.
Dehydration causes rapid welfare deterioration in cattle including reduced feed intake, impaired thermoregulation, lethargy, and metabolic stress. During heat waves, inadequately watered cattle experience severe physiological stress. Trough management is critical: dirty water, inadequate trough space, or dominant cows monopolising access can leave subordinate individuals dehydrated even when nominally adequate water is available. Regular assessment of actual drinking behaviour is essential.
