Electric Fencing and Cattle Welfare

Electric fencing is a key pasture management tool, but poor installation and maintenance can cause repeated welfare-relevant shocks and fence-related injuries.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Electric fencing welfare impacts are primarily caused by poor installation or maintenance rather than the technology itself. A well-earthed, well-maintained electric fence delivers one or two effective shocks that rapidly condition avoidance with minimal ongoing welfare impact. By contrast, low-power or poorly earthed systems deliver repeated weak shocks without achieving avoidance conditioning — increasing cumulative shock exposure substantially. Regular impedance testing and vegetation clearing are the critical welfare maintenance actions.
