Electronic identification systems represent a significant opportunity to improve cattle welfare through earlier detection of health problems before they cause significant suffering. Rumination monitoring detects metabolic disease, respiratory infection, and pain-related behaviour changes before visual clinical signs appear, allowing earlier intervention and shorter suffering duration. Location tracking identifies animals that fail to visit feeding and drinking points, detecting welfare problems in group housing systems that escape routine visual observation. Widespread adoption of EID for welfare monitoring — not just movement traceability — would substantially reduce the burden of preventable disease-related suffering in commercial cattle.
