Fly burden causes substantial, often chronic welfare harm during summer months. Head fly attack causes pain and irritation that disrupts normal grazing behaviour — affected cattle group together and cannot feed normally. Horn flies cause pain from thousands of bites, causing blood loss, restlessness, and reduced time spent grazing. Welfare signs including bunching, head shaking, self-grooming, and reduced feed intake signal unacceptable fly burden. Integrated control combining insecticide-treated ear tags, pour-on products, physical protection (back rubbers, shade), and manure management to reduce breeding sites provides the most effective and welfare-positive control.
