Grass-fed and free-range beef systems provide genuine welfare benefits for cattle that indoor finishing systems cannot replicate. Grazing behaviour, social interaction in larger groups, freedom of movement, and environmental complexity all contribute to better welfare outcomes. However, significant variation exists between free-range systems: some use outdoor access primarily during good weather with extended indoor periods, while others maintain cattle outdoors year-round on nutritionally adequate pastures. Weather exposure in unmanaged systems can cause welfare problems during severe winters. Welfare labels with specific requirements and independent auditing provide more reliable welfare information than unaudited marketing claims.
