Evidence-based resources for animal welfare
Hardware disease (traumatic reticuloperitonitis) occurs when swallowed metal objects penetrate the reticulum wall. This guide covers welfare and prevention.
Hardware disease causes significant pain from peritonitis and is often fatal without intervention. Early cases respond to magnet administration, antibiotics, and anti-inflammatories. Surgical rumenotomy retrieves objects and magnets in selected cases. Prevention through permanent oral magnets (given once at around 6-12 months of age) is highly effective and cost-efficient. Keeping farmyard areas clear of metal debris reduces ingestion risk.
