Preventive vaccination and biosecurity programmes are the most cost-effective welfare interventions in cattle production, preventing disease before welfare is compromised.
Disease prevention investment is the most efficient welfare intervention in cattle production — diseases prevented never cause welfare harm. BVD, IBR, respiratory disease and clostridial diseases collectively represent the largest welfare burden in UK cattle herds. Vaccination programmes eliminate or substantially reduce the incidence of these conditions, improving welfare at scale across the herd. Biosecurity — which requires behavioural change and infrastructure investment rather than just products — is the harder but equally important component of disease prevention welfare strategy.
