Liver fluke (Fasciola hepatica) is a major parasitic disease of cattle causing liver damage, weight loss, anaemia, and chronic welfare compromise, with management complicated by anthelmintic resistance.
Liver fluke causes significant, often invisible welfare compromise in chronically infected cattle. Hepatic damage impairs metabolic function, reducing feed conversion and energy availability. Anaemia causes exercise intolerance and weakness. Secondary bacterial infections (black disease) in fluke-damaged livers cause rapid, painful death. Subclinical fluke burdens reduce body condition and welfare throughout the grazing season without obvious clinical signs. Targeted treatment using diagnostic testing rather than whole-herd calendar dosing reduces resistance development while protecting welfare in genuinely infected animals.
