Bovine respiratory syncytial virus (BRSV) is a major cause of serious respiratory disease in young cattle and its welfare impact requires effective prevention and treatment protocols.
BRSV causes acute respiratory distress and fever that significantly impairs welfare in affected calves. Secondary bacterial pneumonia commonly follows BRSV infection, further worsening disease and welfare. Without early treatment, severe cases cause lasting lung damage. Welfare priorities include vaccination of cows before calving to pass maternal antibody, early clinical detection, prompt antibiotic treatment of bacterial complications, and anti-inflammatory therapy.
