Veal production has historically raised significant welfare concerns. Modern welfare standards in rose veal and alternative systems provide much better outcomes than traditional white veal production.
Veal production welfare has undergone a dramatic transformation. Traditional white veal, produced in individual narrow crates preventing any movement, caused profound suffering through physical restriction, social deprivation, and induced anemia (iron restriction for white meat color). The EU's ban on veal crates and individual housing of calves over 8 weeks represents one of the significant animal welfare regulatory advances of the past decades.
Rose veal — the modern UK alternative — is produced in group housing with space for movement, straw bedding for natural behavior, and social contact. Bull calves from dairy herds, which would otherwise be shot at birth, are raised to 6-8 months and slaughtered humanely. This is genuinely welfare-superior to the alternative of neonatal culling.
