Dairy calf environmental welfare encompasses thermal comfort, disease prevention, and social needs that are simultaneously difficult to optimise. Cold stress increases susceptibility to disease and causes welfare harm through energy expenditure on thermoregulation. Hutch housing provides excellent ventilation reducing respiratory disease but denies social contact. Warm group housing allows social interaction but creates respiratory disease pathways. Welfare-focused calf environment management balances these competing factors through adequate bedding provision, transition to social housing as early as disease risk allows, and sufficient space for calves to perform normal behaviours.
