Dehorning adult or growing cattle causes more pain and welfare compromise than calf disbudding. When necessary, comprehensive pain management is essential.
Adult dehorning represents a more serious welfare event than calf disbudding because horn cores are fully developed and vascular. The procedure requires cutting through significant tissue and causes greater tissue trauma. Without adequate multi-modal pain management including pre-procedural local anaesthesia, peri-procedural sedation in some cases, and long-acting NSAID administration, cattle experience significant post-procedural pain for 24-48 hours. Prevention through breeding polled genetics or ensuring timely calf disbudding remains the best welfare strategy.
