Different beef finishing systems have distinct welfare profiles. Understanding trade-offs helps consumers and farmers make welfare-informed decisions.
Beef finishing system welfare trade-offs are complex. High-concentrate indoor finishing achieves rapid growth but at welfare cost from metabolic disease, liver abscesses, and respiratory disease risk. Grass-based finishing is slower but associated with significantly lower disease rates and provides behavioural opportunities through grazing. Hybrid systems providing some outdoor access even in predominantly indoor finishing systems achieve partial welfare benefits. Consumer preference for grass-finished beef incentivises continuation of these welfare-positive systems.
