Horn flies cause significant welfare harm to cattle through blood feeding, causing anaemia and behavioural disruption. Effective control improves welfare and production outcomes.
Horn fly welfare impact extends beyond the immediate discomfort of biting. Cattle with heavy horn fly burdens reduce grazing time by over half, fundamentally disrupting the feeding behaviour that maintains body condition and productivity. The chronic blood loss from thousands of daily bites causes anaemia reducing oxygen-carrying capacity and immune function. Effective ear tag or pour-on treatment at the start of fly season maintains welfare by restoring normal grazing behaviour and preventing anaemia during the summer production period.
