Welfare monitoring technology offers genuine benefits for cattle welfare by enabling continuous objective assessment that replaces infrequent subjective human observation. Automated lying time monitoring detects welfare-compromising reductions in daily lying time that manual observation would miss. Machine vision lameness scoring identifies lame cows earlier in the disease course when treatment is most effective and welfare impact is least. Rumination monitoring detects metabolic disease early. However, technology complements rather than replaces good stockmanship: sensor data must be interpreted by knowledgeable people and trigger appropriate responses.
