Neonatal Calf Mortality Prevention and Welfare

Neonatal calf mortality in the first week of life represents significant welfare harm. Prevention through management and early intervention reduces both suffering and losses.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Neonatal calf welfare in the first critical days depends on rapid colostrum absorption, protection from cold, and prompt treatment when problems develop. Hypothermic calves that are found quickly, dried, warmed in a warming box, and given colostrum via stomach tube can recover fully. Calves in whom failure of passive transfer is identified at 18-24 hours can receive plasma transfusion. Prevention through monitoring calving cows closely, ensuring calves receive colostrum within 6 hours, and keeping calving pens clean and draught-free prevents most neonatal mortality.
