Routine painful procedures including disbudding, dehorning, and castration cause significant welfare suffering in cattle that can be substantially reduced through analgesia.
Cattle disbudding and dehorning without analgesia causes acute pain measured through elevated cortisol, abnormal behaviour, and reduced feeding. Pain responses persist for up to 24 hours post-procedure without NSAID treatment. Welfare-responsible practice combines local anaesthetic for the procedure with NSAID for post-procedural pain relief. This combination is affordable, effective, and represents the minimum acceptable standard of care for these routine but painful procedures. Veterinary prescribing of analgesia enables farmer compliance with welfare best practice.
