Post-calving welfare requires high-intensity monitoring during a period when cows are physiologically most vulnerable. Cows experiencing milk fever, for example, cannot rise without treatment and deteriorate rapidly - progressing from muscle weakness to recumbency and eventually death within hours if untreated. The clustering of conditions means that one problem predisposes to others, and cows with retained placenta are at elevated risk of metritis, which increases ketosis risk through reduced feed intake.
