Access to clean, palatable water is fundamental to cattle welfare. Water quality problems cause reduced intake, health issues, and welfare compromise that are often underestimated.
Water deprivation or reduced intake from quality problems causes dehydration stress in cattle that is often insidious and under-recognised. In summer heat, adequate cool water intake is critical for heat dissipation. Contaminated troughs with high bacteria or chemical levels cause taste aversion, and animals drink inadequately even when troughs appear full. Providing sufficient trough space per animal, regular cleaning, and periodic water quality testing maintains one of the most basic welfare needs.
