Dairy Cow Free-Stall Welfare: Cubicle Design and Lying Time Standards

Free-stall (cubicle) housing is the dominant dairy cow housing system in the UK and northern Europe. The design of cubicle beds — size, base material, surface, and barriers — is one of the most important determinants of dairy cow lying time, comfort, and welfare.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Cows in poorly designed cubicles lie for fewer hours per day, redistributing time to standing in passageways where hoof health deteriorates. Short cubicles cause cows to stand partially outside the cubicle, exposing feet to slurry and increasing lameness. Inadequate cubicle width prevents comfortable side-lying in large breeds, forcing cows into less comfortable sternal positions. Mattress cubicles provide less cushioning than deep sand beds, and worn mattresses cause pressure points over bony prominences. Welfare-optimised cubicle design — sized correctly for the breed, with appropriate base material and correctly placed barriers — is one of the highest-return welfare investments available to dairy farmers.
