Dairy goats are milked commercially across the UK and Europe, but kids are typically separated from does within hours of birth and fed milk replacer. This causes maternal and offspring distress comparable to that in dairy cattle systems.
Separation distress in does and kids is expressed through vocalisation, searching behaviour, and reduced feed intake. Does continue to call for removed kids for days. Male kids without a welfare pathway represent a significant welfare issue. Alternative systems including extended nursing, shared suckling, and on-farm welfare pathways for male kids exist and are beginning to appear in premium dairy goat supply chains.
