Welfare Considerations

Tethering is one of the most severe welfare compromises applied to goats. Goats are highly active, curious animals with strong social and exploratory drives that are completely frustrated by tethering. Physical risks include strangulation in ropes, limb injuries from chain tangling, and inability to seek shade or shelter. Nutritional deprivation once the immediate grazing radius is exhausted is common. Robust fencing enabling paddock grazing or browsing systems provides welfare-compatible alternatives for every context where tethering is currently used.

What You Can Do

Never tether goats — provide adequate fencing for rotational grazing instead
Report tethered goats kept in welfare-compromising conditions to the RSPCA or local authority
Support campaigns to ban goat tethering in jurisdictions where it is still permitted
Advise smallholders and new goat keepers about welfare-friendly alternatives to tethering
