Surgical castration of piglets without adequate pain relief remains common in many countries. Evidence-based pain management protocols can substantially reduce suffering during and after the procedure.
Pain research demonstrates that even young piglets experience significant pain during and after castration — shown through vocalisation, posture abnormalities and elevated stress hormones. Multimodal pain management (local anaesthetic plus NSAID) provides superior welfare outcomes compared to either alone. The practical barriers cited by producers (time, cost, skills) are surmountable with appropriate training and veterinary support.
