Pigs have a strong rooting drive that is frustrated in barren concrete or slatted floor systems. UK welfare legislation requires enrichment materials, but the quality and quantity of enrichment provision varies greatly between farms.
Rooting is a high-motivation behaviour in pigs that cannot be fully satisfied by hard, non-consumable objects like chains or pipes. Pigs provided with straw, compost, or soil spend significantly more time in enrichment behaviour and show lower aggression levels. The minimum legal standard of enrichment in bare systems frequently fails to provide adequate satisfaction of the rooting drive, creating chronic frustration.
