Farrowing crates confine sows for up to five weeks around birth and prevent natural nest-building and maternal behaviours. The UK has repeatedly delayed a ban despite strong evidence for welfare alternatives including free farrowing systems.
Sows are highly motivated to build nests before farrowing, performing repetitive nest-building behaviour even when given no materials. Confinement in crates prevents this entirely, causing frustration and stereotypic behaviour. The inability to turn around or move freely for weeks causes physical discomfort and psychological distress. Evidence from alternative systems demonstrates that good piglet survival and sow welfare are compatible goals.
